What is a square in gambling? If you can't spot the sucker in your first half hour at the table... then you ARE the sucker. Guys around here will tell you: you play for a living. It's like any other job. You don't gamble — you grind it out. Your goal is to win one big bet an hour. That's it. Get your money in when you have the best of it, protect it when you don't. Don't give anything away. That's how I've paid my way through half of law school. A true grinder. That was Rounders' opening rule — look around the table for the sucker, and if you can't spot him, it's you. The player everyone else is feeding on: the square. A casual or recreational bettor. The opposite of a sharp. In plain terms: squares bet for fun — favorites, overs, home teams, big names. Nothing wrong with it, but the books count on it. “Joey Jacoby's a square — whatever he wants to get down, we take.” Let's use this example. On a big Sunday, most casual money lands on the popular favorite and the over. Books know the pattern and price it in — which is why the popular side isn't automatically the right side. Lines and prices can differ by sportsbook. Nothing here guarantees a result or tells you to bet. Lines move and books differ. Nothing here is a guarantee or a command to bet — it's how the number works.
