What is hold in sports betting? Four reels, sevens across, three fifteen-thousand-dollar jackpots? Do you have any idea what the odds are? Shoot, it's gotta be in the millions, maybe more. Three fuckin' jackpots in twenty minutes? Why didn't you pull the machines? Why didn't you call me? Well, it happened so quick. Three guys won. I didn't have a chance to call you. You didn't see the scam? You didn't see what was going on? — Well, there's no way to determine that, Sam. Yes, there is. An infallible way. They won. Well, it's a casino. People gotta win sometimes. Hey… you're pissing me off. Now you're insulting my intelligence. You think I'm a fuckin' idiot? You know goddamn well somebody had to get into those machines and set those fuckin' reels. The probability on one four-reel machine is a million and a half to one. On three machines in a row, it's in the billions. It cannot happen. You fuckin' momo, what's the matter with you? Didn't you see you were being set up on the second win? I really think— — Wait. You didn't see that you were being set up on the second win? I really think you're overreacting— Listen, you fuckin' yokel, I've had it with you. Get your ass and get your things and get out of here. You're firing me? — I'm firing you. No, I'm not firing. I'm firing you. You might regret this, Mr. Rothstein. I'll regret it even more if I keep you on. — This is not the way to treat people. If you didn't know you were being scammed, you're too fuckin' dumb to keep this job. If you did know, you were in on it. Either way, you're out! Get out. I'm sorry, but he knew about our getting hit on three big machines in a row and he did nothing about it. That means either he was in on it or, forgive me for saying this, he was too dumb to see what was going on. Before we point the dirty end of the stick at old Don, we better be sure we can prove them charges. — Believe me, if I could prove it, he would be under arrest. Are we certain that you want the Gaming Control Board eyeballing your record and your gangster pals like Nicky Santoro? I think you're way out of line talking to me like that… He's weak, he's incompetent, he jeopardizes the whole place. You have got me there. Old Don is as useless as tits on a boar. But he is my brother-in-law. And I would look on it as a personal favor if you'd think some more on hiring him back. I can't do that. I appreciate the fact that he's your brother-in-law… but I cannot do that. Could there be any position further down the trough? — I'm sorry, I can't do anything. He cannot be trusted. [Ace takes a call.] You know, that's it. I'm sorry. Mr. Rothstein, your people never will understand the way it works out here. You're all just our guests. But you act like you're at home. Let me tell you something, partner — you ain't home. But that's where we're gonna send you if it harelips the Governor. That was Casino. Three fifteen-thousand-dollar jackpots in twenty minutes, and the slot boss shrugs: it's a casino, people gotta win sometimes. Ace knows better. Over millions of bets, the house is supposed to keep a steady slice. That slice is the hold. The share of the money wagered that the book keeps. It can mean the margin built into the odds, or what the book actually kept after the results. In plain terms: a book doesn't need to win every bet. It needs its slice of the total to show up over time. Theoretical hold is the slice baked into the prices; actual hold is what really stayed in the drawer. “Hold was ugly for the books last night — the public cashed.” Let's use this example. Two bettors, one on each side at minus one-ten. Each risks one-ten, so the book takes in two-twenty. The winner gets back two-ten: his one-ten plus one hundred. The book keeps ten dollars out of two-twenty, about four and a half percent. That's theoretical hold. Now the real number. In 2025, Americans legally bet one hundred sixty-six point nine four billion dollars on sports, and sportsbooks kept sixteen point nine six billion. That's a hold of about ten point two percent. Hold is the house’s number across millions of bets. It tells you what the book keeps on average — not what happens to any one ticket. Lines move and books differ. Nothing here is a guarantee or a command to bet — it's how the number works.
"Hold" can mean the theoretical margin embedded in posted odds or the sportsbook's realized revenue as a percentage of handle. Those are related but not identical.
