The Cold Line
The short answer
The amount of money risked on a bet.
What is a stake in sports betting? The amount of money risked on a bet. In plain terms: What you're putting on the line. Your stake is the most you can lose on that bet, so decide it before you look at the potential payout. “Based on my bankroll, my max stake is one hundred dollars per play.” Let's use this example. A $100 stake at plus 150 profits $100 times 150 divided by 100, which is $150. Add the stake back and the return is $250. The stake is the $100 at risk; profit and total return are separate amounts. Lines move and books differ. Nothing here is a guarantee or a command to bet — it's how the number works.
Knowing the language is step one — knowing the true price is the edge. The Cold Line’s signal desk tracks the no-vig fair number and the closing-line value behind terms like this, before the market moves.
