The short answer
Winning against the point spread.
What is a cover in sports betting? To cover means your pick wins after the point spread is applied. A favorite covers by winning by more than the spread; an underdog can cover by losing by less than the spread or by winning outright. A team can win the game and still fail to cover; an underdog can lose the game and still cover. “Did the Titans cover the spread last night?” Let's use this example. Cover is a spread result, not simply the game winner. Kansas City is minus 6.5 and wins 27 to 20, a 7-point margin. Seven is greater than 6.5, so the Kansas City minus 6.5 spread ticket covers. If Kansas City won by only three, Kansas City would win the game but the minus 6.5 spread ticket would lose. Lines and prices can differ by sportsbook. Nothing here guarantees a result or tells you to bet. Lines move and books differ. Nothing here is a guarantee or a command to bet — it's how the number works.
Knowing the language is step one — knowing the true price is the edge. The Cold Line’s signal desk tracks the no-vig fair number and the closing-line value behind terms like this, before the market moves.
"The Chiefs covered!" means they won by more than the spread.
